Room 112 has a new inhabitant: Friedrich, the red-eared slider. Friedrich is about five years old and he has lived in captivity his whole life. Red-eared sliders are indigenous to new england and their range extends throughout North America. These turtles are aquatic, but because turtles are reptiles, they do breathe air. If you are interested in learning more about red-eared sliders, or turtles in general, I invite you to do some research and post what you learn on the blog.
I did some research on Friedrich! and apparently, the red-eared slider which has the scientific name of Trachemys script elegant is a semi-aquatic turtle which belongs to the family Emydidae. I learned that it is the most popular pet turtle in the U.S.! It is native only to the southern US, but because it is the most popular pet turtle, it has become established in other areas of the US and in other parts of the world.
ReplyDeletei have only seen turtles in pictures and Friedrich is my first turtle up close, but i have still noticed that the turtle shell is always different, which made me wonder if there is a certain pattern for the shell according to specie hmmmm
ReplyDeleteI think Frederick is a great addition to the classroom enviornment. I'm so glad we have a class pet, although I think we should be more involved in his acitve life and maybe take turns feeding him. I did research about his type and came to the same conclusion as Taylor that his species is most popular as a pet in the United States.
